03 October 2009
The Banag Banag Inc., Bisaya Speaking Association in NSW will conduct a Self Esteem/Self Confidence Workshop on Saturday, 03 October 2009 at the Blacktown Council’s Rooty Hill School of Arts Hall at corner Rooty Hill Road and Barker Street from l0:00 a.m. till 12:00 noon. Over the last 14 years, Banag-Banag has actively been involved in various social and charitable works both in Sydney and in the Philippines, which includes our continuing projects among others, an Educational Scholarship Program in the Philippines. We provided relief goods to the Cyclone Frank victims in Pavia, Ilo-Ilo and financial assistance to the rebuilding of Winston Church in Dinagat Island, Surigao del Norte, Philippines. As a contribution and service to our members and friends, we are inviting your children aged 10 to 12 years old to participate in this free workshop to be carried out by a qualified instructor, Sensei Phil Chapman of Goju Ryu Karate Do. This activity will enhance your children’s physical, mental and social well-being.
With the recent increase in bullying, predominantly in schools, the workshop is helpful to participants on how to be “street-wise” through defensive martial arts and to avoid being a victim. Your kids will learn how to use the tools that they are born with, their eyes and hands; how to talk and look; how to defend themselves mentally and not necessarily by physical means. Major points that will be demonstrated during this two hour workshop are:
• how to avoid getting into a bullying situation or any trouble
• learn the technique of breathing
• learn basic form of concentration/meditation
• movement of hands skill
• use of body language
We will be providing snacks to the children. We are also enticing parents to come along and observe the proceeding as we have some fun activities for you. Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes and leave your jewelry at home.

Banag Banag, Inc Leads Charity Fund Raising

Banag Banag, Inc – The Bisaya Speaking Association in Australia held its Annual Charity Gala Dinner-Dance last August 1, 2009 at The Rooty Hill RSL. The themed fund raising night encouraged members and guests to join the party dressed in their favourite Latin outfit. Throughout the history of the Philippines, Latin, or Spanish influence was predominant. Attires ranged from Caribbean to Mexican, Brazilian Mardi Gras, and the ever popular moustachioed slick men in black tight pants and shirt. Of course Carmen Miranda and her fruity headgear were represented and so was the frilled maracas performer.

Ticket sales reached 600 which put a strain on Rooty Hill RSL’s capacity. The show included quality performances by Brian Lorenz who sang his interpretation of Barry Manilow’s Copacabana, Cleo Diana, and the closest we got to J-Lo with her appropriately titled song, Let’s Get Loud. Additional performances were provided by Dance Junction, tot powerhouse Chelsea Castillo and the highlight of the night, the ‘Brazilian Fantasy’ who were in ‘Mardi Gras’ attire, had everyone’s  heart pumping, their eyes wide open and fixated on the gyrating, hip throws of the dancers.

Banag Banag President, Rachael Rebollido attributed the night’s success to the committed, heartfelt efforts of the enthusiastic members. It showed the unity and compassion of the members towards achieving and sourcing donations for the betterment and welfare of Filipinos and Filipino-Australians both locally and in the Philippines.
